Sought after by some of the worlds leading decorators and private collectors, Gavin Rookledge did not set out to become a bookbinder - the craft at which he excels. As an art student he decided to make a portfolio for his drawings; his tutor saw it and steered him towards a specialist course and, although Rookledge eschewed the formal training, his fate was sealed.
He works from a passion and from the inspiration provided by his materials - principally leather of myriad different weights and textures, which he decorates with beaten metal, wood, fabric and other materials. The result is sculptural and highly tactile - books that have unique character and beauty.
Increasingly he frequently works in tandem on collaborative projects with other crafts people and designers such as Terence Disdale, the internationally acclaimed yacht designer, silversmith Gabriella Lane and others.
Gavin's company Rook's Books Ltd, has been trading for over 20 years and Clients include Roman Abramovich, Bill and Melinda Gates, The English Royal Family, National Collections and numerous private individuals.
