Bespoke backgammon boards

Alexandra takes commissions for exclusive bespoke British made backgammon boards, games sets and games tables. Each piece is a one-off, created in close conversation with the client to reflect their lives and tastes. Alexandra has created such one-off creations for the likes of Sir Richard Branson, Elle Macpherson, Jacquetta Wheeler, American Vogue and for Links of London founder Annoushka Dukas.

With master British craftsmen we work with hand-selected woods to build the games and furniture. Each piece is then individually designed, printed or painted by Alexandra, laced with narrative and provenance. Every detail carries significance: compartments lined with calf leather and embossed with messages and dates, playing pieces crafted from metals, woods or semi-precious stones, subtle marquetry disclosing hidden meanings. The finished product is a glorious practical conversation piece that makes the most intimate of luxury gifts, a truly thoughtful present.

British designer Alexandra has played backgammon all her life, and her love of the game was cemented as a child in Cairo. The rattle of dice on large wooden crate-boards signaled the game in play, as she strolled through the streets with her Egyptian step-grandfather. As she travelled more her interest in backgammon evolved, over countless games. She became enthralled by the idea that board games operate as an independent vocabulary requiring neither common language nor culture.

Launched in December 2010, Alexandra Llewellyn Designs embody an exquisitely unique vision of the oldest recorded board game in the world. Alexandra works with an incredible network of British craftsman, making any design and use of material possible and each piece is built to the very highest of standards.
