Turnbull & Asser

Royal warrant shirtmaker

Royal warrant shirtmaker and dresser of the world's most eminent men since 1885, this year Turnbull & Asser celebrate 130 years of British manufacturing and craftsmanship.

It’s a surprising fact that a shirt that fits better, looks better, is better made, from better fabric, and has the potential to last two decades, need cost no more – and, in some cases, will cost less – than a designer shirt with a six-month lifespan. Welcome to the rather wonderful world of bespoke.

For Turnbull & Asser’s Royal Warrant holder and director Steven Quin, the biggest difference is that a bespoke shirt represents an individual choice. ‘The customer gets exactly what he wants from it. It’s something that reflects his character.’ One of the things customers increasingly want from their shirts is a slim fit. ‘Fit is important now,’ says Quin. ‘In the Seventies, people wore shirts that were cut straight; they were just something that you wore under your jacket.’ He believes that two factors have driven the appetite for closer-fitting shirts: ‘Men are more comfortable walking around the office with their jackets off now, and they look after themselves; they go to the gym more.’

Our tailors take over a dozen upper-body measurements to make sure each bespoke shirt is the perfect fit for the wearer's physique and personal requirements. There are 12 stock collars to start with and 11 basic cuffs, but of course the virtue of cutting a collar pattern by hand is that it can be any shape at all. The stock options are more a jumping-off point - a launch pad for the customers imagination.
